Following the success of their hybrid roadshow summit in the height of COVID, year two of the annual conference was fully in-person and held over two days at the Grey Eagle Event Centre and Hotel and included an awards ceremony and marketplace.

The purpose, as always, was to highlight the social and economic benefits of Indigenous tourism in Alberta, teach tourism industry partners how to work with Indigenous communities, and educate stakeholders on how to tell the Indigenous story and market these experiences to domestic and international travellers.

  • The Experience

A custom design conference brand was created inspired by topographical maps and the natural Alberta landscape and animals. Bold blue and red/orange colour palettes along with quotes from members paired with photos of member destinations created an inclusive and educational experience. The brand was used throughout the event centre and hotel as directional signage and footprints [or rather hoof prints], breakout session signage, welcome messaging, member quotes and set design. An animated version of the brand was created for the presentation content and award show graphics.

The jam-packed two day schedule was comprised of 12 breakout sessions and six mainstage keynote sessions filled with education and emotion through a variety of stories and experiences. An opening ceremony and grand exit bookended the conference featuring prayers and traditional dancing and singing.

There were plenty of activities and networking opportunities in addition to the sessions. The evening prior to the conference had off-site cultural activity programs, and during the conference the marketplace in the foyer showcased local Indigenous artisans, while two Kinship Corners were available for guests to connect in either a teepee or a trapper’s tent seated in fur lined rocking chairs or on comfy poufs.

The main stage and room were flipped on night one for the CITE (Celebrating Indigenous Tourism Excellence) Awards Gala. The event brand was transformed into northern lights screen graphics and the stage decor featured adirondack chairs, wood stumps, blankets and pillows alongside coniferous trees creating a night in the wilderness feeling.

The gala reception started with the “Taste of Alberta”. The Grey Eagle catering team served gourmet offerings of bannock, bison, trout, boar and elk with local fruits, vegetables and honey. Two local chef’s created two items each that highlighted even more local and traditional ingredients - Chefs Scott Iserhoff of Pei Pei Chei Ow and Denia Baltzer of Creative Cuisine. The “Little Chief Sumac-nade” welcome drink was created with rye, steeped sumac with lemons and Tsuu T’ina Honey, or guests could also try the Spiked Evergreen Forest Tea.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Damase Elis wow’d the crowd during the pre and post receptions, while our conference MC, the dazzling Ger Carriere, took the stage once again to not only host but perform her song Dangerous. Four awards were handed out along with several certificates of recognitions.
