The 2023 International Indigenous Tourism Conference (IITC) was hosted on Treaty 1 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis in Winnipeg, Manitoba. IITC is the largest Indigenous tourism conference in the world with the goal to join tourism industry leaders, innovators and thought-provoking speakers for three days of inspiration and learning.

  • The Experience

Over three days, attendees learn about the latest trends in the industry, new research in the field, and network with Indigenous operators, partners, funding agencies and experts. The conference consisted of a choice of 15 cultural tours that took attendees around Treaty 1 Territory and Treaty 3 Territory, a welcome reception called Taste of Turtle Island [Turtle Island refers to the continent of North America], two packed days of sessions and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) National Awards Gala.

In this 10th anniversary year, the conference theme was Adventure to Understanding, a call to action for visitors to experience a rich tapestry of Indigenous tourism — through enriching stories, connection to place and Indigenous hospitality. The conference logo and tagline were inspired by Indigenous Tourism Manitoba. Adventure to Understanding represents the bringing together of Indigenous cultures — First Nations, Inuit and Métis — and their unique stories. It features seven birds coming together to make one and form inclusive paths to the centre.

Our Experience Team worked with Ininew Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Entrepreneur, Letica Spence to create the custom illustration for the overall visual identity inspired by a trio of geese signifying the coming and going of the seasons against the Manitoba lakes, rocky shorelines, thick forests and reeds. This conference brand was applied to every element - from the DJ surround to the screen content, the step and repeat signage to the unique sculpture in the foyer, but most impactfully to the stage design. The stage design team transformed Leticia’s beautiful artwork into a three-dimensional set featuring tree and bird cut outs, custom ramp/stair side stage covers, and a one-of-a-kind lighting design that transformed the room several times throughout the conference.

Keynotes, panels, breakout sessions and workshops were full of great information for business owners, with topics including product development, marketing and packaging Indigenous experiences, and partnership strategies for business growth. The opening reception and awards gala featured amazing cultural experiences, traditional dancing, and local musicians, including JUNO Award-winning DJ Shub, who’s considered to be the Godfather of PowWow Step.

  • Whizbang Moment

The Taste of Turtle Island opening reception menu was orchestrated by Métis chef, recipe developer and the Indigenous culinary consultant for Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Chef Jenni Lessard, and featured 11 Indigenous Chef’s from across Canada including Jenni. Each chef created a dish or two for the reception style event highlighting the Indigenous culture and local ingredients such as Agave and Sage Glazed Salmon, Rosemary Duck with Citrus Cranberry Sauce and Sweet Corn Puree, and Sweetgrass Infused Panna Cotta with Berries.
